Veteran fencer loses in
first round
Globe and Mail Update
Even though she lost her first-round match in fencing
15-8 to South Korea's Seo Mi-Jung, getting to the Olympics would seem to have been enough
for 42-year-old Jujie Luan.
She moved to Canada from China in 1989 and only played
part time thereafter. But Luan decided that she wanted to compete at her third Olympics
and was able to qualify for Sydney. Now living in Edmonton, Luan won a gold medal for
China in 1984.
Montreal's Julie Mahoney was defeated by Romania's Reka
Zsofia Szabo 15-10 in the second round of the event. The 22-year-old, who started fencing
when she was seven, is the reigning Pan Am Games bronze medalist.
