The women's eight came alive in the final 1,000 metres and finished second in a photo
finish with Australia in their repêchage, edging the host nation by only one-tenth of a
second. Their placing meant a spot in the final, since the top three boats automatically

community adopts Canadian Olympic rowing team
The friendly Queensland city of Rockhampton built a $200,000 training centre for the
Canadian rowing team. This is an even more stunning gesture when you realize that the
centre was custom built for the Canadian team to prepare for the Sydney Olympic Games. It
is the equivalent of a Montreal suburb paying for a Toronto Maple Leafs training arena. -
