Robinson and Luke
win silver at rowing World Cup event
VIENNA (CP) - Canadian rowing tandem Emma Robinson of
Winnipeg and Theresa Luke of 100 Mile House, B.C., won a silver at the rowing World Cup
regatta Sunday, finishing second in the women's pair.
Robinson and Luke finished in eight minutes 6.3 seconds
while the Australian team of Kate Slatter and Rachel Taylor was first in 8:03.7. A German
boat was third in 8:09.06. Canada's second entry in the women's pair, Kubet Weston of
Tillsonburg, Ont. and Kristen Wall of Victoria finished ninth.
The Canadian lightweight men's four earned a bronze medal,
finishing in a time of 6:43.48, just behind Austria (6:39.7) and the U.S. (6:42.8).
Members of the four are: Iain Brambell of Brentwood Bay, B.C., Chris Davidson of Oakville,
Ont., Gavin Hassett of Victoria and Jon Beare of Toronto.
The Canadian men's eight finished fourth in 6:05.4 behind
England, Australia and Germany. Members of the men's eight, who hope to qualify for the
Olympics next month, are: Adam Parfitt of Victoria, Mike Belenkie of Calgary, Morgan
Crooks of Lethbridge, Alta., Matt Swick of St. Catharines, Ont., Tom Herschmiller of
Comox, B.C., Larry Varga of Nanoose Bay, B.C., Dave Calder of Victoria, Bryan Donnelly of
Calgary and Chris Taylor of St. Catharines (cox).
The Canadian women's eight (Laryssa Biesenthal of
Walkerton, Ont., Buffy Alexander of St. Catharines, Dorota Urbaniak of Toronto, Heather
Davis of Vancouver, Heather McDermid of Calgary, Alison Korn of Nepean, Ont., Robinson,
Luke and Lesley Thompson of London, Ont., cox) were sixth.
The lightweight women's double of Fiona Milne of
Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont. and Tracy Duncan of Saskatoon was fifth.
