Team Canada was eliminated in second round of playoff action

Team Canada was eliminated by Team Texas this afternoon by a close score of 2-1.

Canada was ahead by one run when after two and a half innings, the score was 1-0. Canada scored their first run in the top of the 3rd when with 2 outs, Richmond's Kristy O'damura hit a single to short and drove in Blenheim's Meaggan Wilton. Meaggan got on base with a single over 3rd base. The damage came in the bottom of the 5th inning when with 1out, Team Texas hit a single to 3rd, followed by a bunt out, hit another single to 3rd and with a hit to centrefield scored two runs. In the 5th inning, Team Texas had 2 runs on 2 hits, one Team Canada error and left one runner left on base. Good defense by Calgary's Hayley Wickenheiser and Vicky Bastarache's pitching kept Team Texas from getting on base for the rest of the game.

The losing pitcher for Canada was New Brunswick's Vicky Bastarache. Canada had 0 runs on 4 hits and 1 error. Team Texas's winning pitcher was Jessica Mendoza. Team Texas had 2 runs on 6 hits and no errors.

Team Texas moves on to play China at 4pm today. The winner will advance to play the winner of Phoenix Storm and (winner between California's 'A's and New Zealand) at 9pm. The loser will be eliminated.

Other playoff results from today include: Australia 9 Phoenix Storm 2; Japan 6 China 5.

The Canada Cup is taking place from July 1-9th at Softball City in Surrey, British Columbia. The Canada Cup is instrumental in the development of the Canadian Team in their preparation for the 2000 Olympic Games. There are 5 of the 8 Olympic Teams competing this week at the Canada Cup.

The Special Olympics Friendship Division of the Canada Cup includes 7 teams from around Canada. The participating teams include: BCSO Stealers, Kelowna Grizzlies, Issaquah Hawks, Richmond Rockets, Saskatoon Diamond Devils, Team Calgary, Team New Brunswick.

Today's Special Olympics Division Results:
BCSO Stealers 29 Grizzlies 8; Richmond Rockets 18 Issaquah Hawks 12.
