Sydney — Cindy Potae hit a sacrifice fly to drive in
the tie-breaking run, then Gina Weber shut down Canada in the bottom of the 10th inning to
give New Zealand a 3-2 Olympic softball victory.
Canada dropped to 0-2 while the Kiwis evened their record
at 1-1.
A night after giving up a two-run homer in the bottom of
the 10th to lose 3-2 to Australia, the six-foot-three, 216-pound Weber struck out five and
walked one while allowing four hits. But New Zealand also committed five errors.
The tournament is the first for the 37-year-old Weber
sincer retiring five years ago.
Winnipeg's Sandy Newsham gave up five hits and seven
walks, striking out three.
The game marked the Olympic softball debut of hockey star
Hayley Wickenhauser of Shaunavon, Sask. Playing left field, she went 1-for-4.
Rhonda Hira went 3-for-4 and drove in the tying run in
the sixth with a sacrifice fly as New Zealand rallied from a 2-0 deficit with single runs
in the fifth and sixth.
