Olympic qualifier
TOKYO (CP) -- The Canadian women's volleyball team dropped
to 0-2 on Sunday losing 3-0 to Japan at the final Olympic qualifying tournament.
Japan, ranked sixth in the world, won by set scores of 25-18, 25-16, 25-15.
The competition is the last chance for Canada to qualify for the Sydney Olympics, which
run from Sept. 15 to Oct 2. Eight countries are at the tournament battling for the four
remaining spots in the Games tournament.
The Canadians, ranked 14th in the world, are the lowest seeded team. "Unforced errors
on balls that we controlled was the determining factor," said Canadian national team
coach Doug Reimer of Winnipeg. "But we had our best blocking match in recent weeks
and that gave us a chance."
Genevieve Lamarre of Rosemere, Que., was the top Canadian scorer with 10 points including
two blocks.
In other games Sunday, No. 9 Netherlands displayed a powerful attack to defeat top-seeded
and world No. 4 China 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-20) while Italy, ranked sixth, beat
fifth-ranked South Korea 3-0 (25-10, 26-24, 28-26). Italy and Japan are tied for first
place in the tournament with 2-0 records. South Korea, China, the Netherlands and Croatia
are all 1-1 while Argentina and Canada are winless.
Canada plays world number-eight Croatia today.
