Canada beats
Kazakhstan to finish fifth
SYDNEY (AP) -- Jana Salat of Calgary scored two
minutes into overtime to lift Canada to a 9-8 victory over Kazakhstan and a fifth-place
finish at the first-ever women's Olympic water polo tournament.
Kazakhstan had a chance to tie it when Olga
Lechshuk broke in free with 38 seconds left in overtime, but goalie Isabelle Auger of
Montreal made the save.
Teams play two three-minute overtime periods when a
water polo game is tied and a victory is needed.
Montreal's Johanne Begin and Ann Dow, and Sue
Gardiner of North Vancouver, B.C., each scored two goals for Canada, which finished the
tournament 2-2-2.
While it wasn't the result they hoped for when the
week began, the Canadians had fun. During introductions they whizzed red-and-white
Frisbees with the Maple Leaf on them into the stands.
Kazakhstan goes home 0-6-0 in its Olympic debut.
