Canada rallies to tie Russia 7 - 7
Ryde, Australia -- Montreal's Johane Begin and
Marie-Claude Deslieres each scored in the final quarter as Canada rallied to tie Russia
7-7 in women's water polo action Saturday at the Sydney Olympics.
Russia looked on the way to victory on Natalia
Koutouzova's sweeping, one-handed score with 5:02 remaining Saturday.
But Cora Campbell of Calgary lobbed a long
cross-pool pass to Begin about 30 seconds later to cut the lead to one. Deslieres' goal, a
power shot from beyond the seven-metre area, tied it with 2:21 to go.
Both teams had chances to win after that.
Irina Tolkounova and Ioulia Petrova each missed
easy-looking shots from just right of the goal. Jana Salat's steal led to a breakaway for
Begin with 1:10 left, but she could not finish.
Ann Dow of Montreal had three goals to lead Canada.
Petrova and Sofia Konoukh led Russia with two goals apiece.
Russia faces Australia, a 9-2 winner earlier over
Kazakstan, on Sunday. Canada will then meet the U.S.
