Canada's team, formally announced yesterday at a news conference on Parliament Hill, will
be part of a Games that will feature 4,000 athletes from 130 countries. The 2000 Sydney

Jeason 2nd in Mount Washington Cycling World Cup
Genevieve Jeanson of Lachine, Que., finished second to defending Olympic champion Jeannie
Longo at the Mount Washington cycling road race on Saturday. Jeanson, who saw her event
record eclipsed by Longo, finished in a time of one hour 14 seconds. Longo, a native of
France, won the 12.2-kilometre race in 58:14, breaking Jeanson's record of 1:01:57, set

Australian community adopts Canadian Olympic rowing
team
The friendly Queensland city of Rockhampton built a $200,000 training centre for the
Canadian rowing team. This is an even more stunning gesture when you realize that the
centre was custom built for the Canadian team to prepare for the Sydney Olympic Games. It
is the equivalent of a Montreal suburb paying for a Toronto Maple Leafs training arena. -

at World Junior Diving
Blythe Hartley of North Vancouver, B.C., successfully defended her women's one-metre title
Wednesday at the world junior diving championships. Hartley, 19, totalled 400.57 points
for the win. Her best dive was her first one in the final, an inward 11/2 which earned her

Team Canada was eliminated by Team Texas by a close score of 2-1 in the second round of
the playoffs. Canada was ahead by one run after two and a half innings with the score 1-0.
The damage came in the bottom of the 5th inning when with 1out, Team Texas hit a single to
3rd, followed by a bunt out, hit another single to 3rd and with a hit to centrefield

Canadian female triathletes are sporting a golden Olympic glow, especially after they
delivered a thrashing to some of the world's best at a World Cup event. Carol Montgomery

1.5-kilometre swim, 40-kilometre cycle and 10-kilometre run on Saturday, while Michellie

Basketball team loses 3 straight to Austrailia
Australia defeated Canada 78-54 Friday to sweep a three-game women's basketball series.
Cal Bouchard of Aurora, Ont., led Canada with nine points while Fredericton's Diane Norman

a step ahead of us but we'll see where we are in September. We've improved since we

Canada's women's national wheelchair basketball team continued their Australian tour

Beach volleyball player suffers concussion
Kristine Drakich collided with her partner in a tournament on Thursday. She had taken a
leave of absence from the University of Toronto to try to make the Olympic team, but the
accident will make her job much more difficult. She and Erminia Russo were on the verge of
qualifying, with eight tournaments left on the Olympic tour. They are currently ranked

wins three gold in paddling
Caroline Brunet, one of Canada's top hopes for Olympic gold this fall, earned three
victories and added a bronze in Sunday's finals at the third stop on the World Cup
