COA
appoints first female winter Chef de Mission
to Salt Lake City Olympic Games
Toronto - ( November 8, 1999 ) - The Canadian
Olympic Association (COA) announced yesterday that Sally
Rehorick of Fredericton, New Brunswick, has been selected
as Canada's Chef de Mission for the 2002 Winter Olympic
Games. This announcement was made at the COA Board of Directors
meeting held in Toronto this weekend.
"Sally will contribute a wonderful working
atmosphere for athletes and staff. She brings enthusiasm
and real joy when she is involved in a project like this
one", said Bill Warren, president of the COA and Chef
de Mission at the Lillehammer Winter Olympic Games.
Currently Director and professor at the Second
Language Education Centre at the University of New Brunswick,
Ms. Rehorick is also an International Skating Union (ISU)
Judge for Singles, Pairs and Dance. She has judged and refereed
international competitions since 1982, and was named international
Judge of the Year in 1989 by the Canadian Figure Skating
Association.
Ms. Rehorick has been involved in the Olympic
Movement for many years. She participated in the past three
Winter Olympic Games as a figure skating official in Nagano,
as Canada's Assistant Chef de Mission in Lillehammer, and
as Team Leader for figure skating in Albertville. She is
currently a "B" member of the COA, and has contributed
to other major COA events such as chairing the VIP and Protocol
committee for the 1999 COA Congress and annual general meeting
in Fredericton.
" I am very excited to be named Chef
de Mission for the Winter Games in 2002," said Ms.
Rehorick regarding her appointment. "Canadian athletes
are among the best in the world and it will be my privilege
to lead them in Salt Lake City. My goal is for every team
member to leave the Games feeling that it was an experience
of a lifetime, that they have competed to the best of their
abilities and that they have made friendships among other
Canadians as well as with people around the world".
Aware of the challenges linked to the 2002
Games, Ms. Rehorick proposes a consistent approach to public
information and media liaisons, and a collaborative approach
to decision-making among COA Executive Committee and Games
Management Committee members. She welcomes the opportunity
to continue the Canadian tradition of being leaders in every
action.
She is fluently bilingual and has considerable
international experience, having lived in the United States,
France and Japan, and having participated in numerous figure
skating competitions.
The COA, a private, not-for-profit corporation, is the largest
private sector funder of amateur sport in Canada. It is
responsible for all aspects of Canada's involvement in the
Olympic Movement, including Canada's participation in the
Olympic and Pan American Games. In addition, the COA manages
a wide variety of programs that promote the Olympic Movement
in Canada through cultural and educational means.
