Bauer
wins freestyle gold; six Canadians go top 10
CBC SPORTS ONLINE - World champion Veronika
Bauer of Toronto won the gold medal in women's aerials Friday
at a freestyle World Cup competition at Lake Placid, N.Y.
Bauer, 21, totalled 183.26 points to
finish ahead of Jacqui Cooper of Australia second in 180.40,
and Deidra Dionne of Red Deer, Alta. was third at 176.87.
"Things are going well heading into the
Olympics," said Bauer, 21, third last weekend at the
World Cup stop at Mont-Tremblant, Que. "I'm getting
better and better right now after struggling before Christmas.
I got my confidence back."
Veronica Brenner of Sharon, Ont., the winner
last weekend, was fifth.
In men's aerials, Alexei Grichin of Belarus
took the gold with 251.51 points. Ales Valenta of the Czech
Republic was second at 247.41, and Steve Omischl of North
Bay, Ont. was a season-high third at 245.46.
"I didn?t have a good showing last weekend
at Mont-Tremblant, so to get back to third is great in preparation
for the Olympics," said Omischl, fourth in the World
Cup standings the past two seasons.
Ryan Blais of Grande Prairie, Alta., was fifth,
Jeff Bean of Ottawa ninth, Nicolas Fontaine of Magog, Que.,
13th.
