Bauer wins freestyle gold; six Canadians go top 10

CBC SPORTS ONLINE - World champion Veronika Bauer of Toronto won the gold medal in women's aerials Friday at a freestyle World Cup competition at Lake Placid, N.Y.

Bauer, 21, totalled 183.26 points to finish ahead of Jacqui Cooper of Australia second in 180.40, and Deidra Dionne of Red Deer, Alta. was third at 176.87.

"Things are going well heading into the Olympics," said Bauer, 21, third last weekend at the World Cup stop at Mont-Tremblant, Que. "I'm getting better and better right now after struggling before Christmas. I got my confidence back."

Veronica Brenner of Sharon, Ont., the winner last weekend, was fifth.

"I didn?t have a good showing last weekend at Mont-Tremblant, so to get back to third is great in preparation for the Olympics," said Omischl, fourth in the World Cup standings the past two seasons.
