Bernier named assistant chef de mission for 2006

Former Olympic diver Sylvie Bernier has been named the assistant chef de mission for Canada's team at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin.

"I hope my experience and background will be an asset to the team in the next 22 months leading up to the Games," she said in a release Wednesday.

Bernier, a native of Ste-Foy, Que., won Canada's first-ever gold medal in diving in the three-metre springboard event at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.

Bernier also won a silver medal at the 1982 Commonwealth Games and a bronze at the 1983 Pan Am Games during her career.

She was named a member of the Order of Canada in 1985 and is in Canada's Sports Hall of Fame.

Shane Pearsall is Canada's chef de mission for the Turin Games.
