SONIA DENONCOURT ANNOUNCES HER RETIREMENT AS FIFA REFEREE

Denoncourt Will Continue As One of Only 25 FIFA Instructors

Ottawa, Ontario - Sonia Denoncourt, who has officiated at every level of soccer; including major international competitions, and men's professional games since 1991, announced her retirement today after 27 years as a referee.

Denoncourt began her officiating career in 1978, and in 1994 became the first female international FIFA referee. Considered one of the top female referees in the world, Denoncourt was appointed as one of only 25 FIFA Instructors in January.

"It is a difficult decision as I am still in love with refereeing," said Denoncourt. "But I guess it is time for me to move on with my life. FIFA recently asked me about my career plans, and I answered that I would respond to the demands and the needs of the game. FIFA has given me the chance again to give back to the game and help referees reach their potential. It is quite an honor, as this is the first time FIFA has appointed women Instructors. I'm trading one dream for another."

Denoncourt has refereed at the last three Women's World Cups (USA 2003, USA 1999 and Sweden 1995), the last two Olympic Games (Sydney 2000 and USA 1996), and a large number of CONCACAF and National Championships. She has made her mark in the history books by working on men's professional games since 1991, including games in Brazil, El Salvador, USA and Canada. She also had the honor to referee the first FIFA World Female All-Star game in 1997 in California.

"With over 100 international appearances, and thousands of games under her belt, she is a true role model for any referee, male or female," said CSA, Chief Operating Officer Kevan Pipe. "Her dedication and passion for the game is remarkable. The soccer world will certainly miss her on the field, but she will continue to have a great impact on the game with her professional work off the field and behind the scenes."

"I want to thank all the people who influenced my career positively and there are too many to mention. I would love to individually thank them all. A special thank you to FIFA, CONCACAF, the CSA and the FSQ who offered unconditional support over those many years filled with emotions."

The Canadian Soccer Association would like to wish Sonia the best of luck in her new role with FIFA in the development of international soccer. She will remain in her current role as Referee Development Coordinator with the CSA.
