Mexico Upsets Canada
2-1 For A Spot To Athens
Ottawa, Ontario – Canada’s Women’s
World Cup Team today failed to qualify for the 2004 Olympics in
Athens after a 2-1 upset by Mexico in the semi-final of the CONCACAF
Olympic Qualifying Tournament in San Jose, Costa Rica.
Maribel Dominguez scored in the 25th and 60th minutes to send Mexico
two goals ahead of Canada before Aysha Jamani of Calgary scored
Canada’s lone goal in the 83rd minute with a shot from 20-yards
out.
Presently, both Jamani and Dominguez are now tied as top scorers
of the tournament with six goals each.
Goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc played 90 minutes for Canada.
USA and Costa Rica will play later today to decide who will join
Mexico to represent CONCACF in Athens. The loser will play Canada
in the third-place game on Friday, March 5th at 5:30 CT.
