Two More Medals Make Twelve for Canadians Heading to Japan

The first week of World Cup racing is underway and the Canadian Disabled Alpine Ski Team, the same delegate that will represent Canada at the 2006 Paralympics in Turin, have notched 12 World Cup podiums as they head to Japan to continue racing next week.

Today saw dominant female skier, Lauren Woolstencroft (Victoria, BC/ Calgary, AB) win another gold medal in the standing class, her third of the week. Clocking in with the time of 1:21.76, Woolstencroft led her field by over a second.

Chris Williamson (Markham, ON) and guide Bobby Taylor (Vancouver, BC) failed to repeat their golden success from yesterday’s super-G, the discipline that favors the pair, but ended up 2nd today in 1:13.69, just 31 hundredths off the pace.

Kimberly Joines (Edmonton, AB) slipped off the podium to finish 4th 1:30.39. Joines won a silver and bronze in giant slalom earlier this week and silver in the super-G yesterday.

Sit skier Jeff Penner (Kitchener, ON) cleaned up his line to crack the top-10, finishing 9th with the time of 1:23.14.

Matt Hallat (Coquitlam, BC) was the 11th fastest in the men’s standing class, 1:24.75.

Montréal’s Arly Fogarty and Brad Lennea (Whistler, BC) were forerunning the event as they do not yet have a World Cup super-G start.

After such a progressively successful week in Korea, Head Coach Leslie Clarke said the team is feeling very confident and strong in their skiing and is looking to continue building on this week’s results when they compete in Japan.

The World Cup team is traveling to Nagano, Japan today to compete in two GS’s and a slalom, Jan. 30 - Feb. 1.
