Silver for Canada's
Women Curlers
VANCOUVER -- Canada's Cheryl Bernard ran out of
extra-end magic in the women's curling gold medal final on Friday.
Bernard gave up a steal of one in the extra frame
and dropped a 7-6 decision to defending Olympic champion Anette
Norberg of Sweden.
Bernard had a chance to run Sweden out of rocks
in the 10th end but her final take-out jammed, allowing Norberg
to force an extra end with a hit-and-stick for a deuce.
With last rock in the extra frame, Bernard was left
with a double take-out but left one Swedish rock in the four-foot
for the steal.
Bernard won three round robin games in an extra
end and had used last rock to her advantage all week long.
Bernard was looking for Canada's first gold medal
in women's curling since Sandra Schmirler won the Olympic title
in Nagano 12 years ago.
End 1: After a clean end, Canada hits and rolls
out to blank the end and retain last rock
End 2: Canada's draw to the four-foot for two is
light, settle for the single
End 3: Sweden hits and sticks for the deuce and
the lead
End 4: Canada draws to the four-foot against two
for the single
End 5: Sweden draws to the button and, after a measurement,
scores their deuce
End 6: Against four Swedish rocks, Canada hits and
sticks for the single
End 7: Sweden's quiet tap for one is light, allowing
Canada to steal two
End 8: Sweden hits and rolls out to blank the end
and retain last rock
End 9: Sweden's hit and stick for one fails, allowing
Canada to steal one
End 10: Sweden hits and sticks for the deuce to
force an extra end
End 11: Canada's double take-out fails, giving Sweden
a steal of one and the win
Earlier today, China defeated Switzerland 12-6 to
claim the bronze medal.
