Groves makes it a silver Sunday in
Richmond
Kristina Groves won her second medal of these Winter
Olympic Games, capturing silver in the ladies 1,500-metres race
on Sunday.
Dutchwoman Ireen Wust took home the gold medal while
Martina Sablikova of the Czech Republic claimed bronze.
Ottawa-born Groves won bronze in the 3,000-metre
race earlier in the week and narrowly missed the podium in the
1,000-metres.
Canadian teammate Christine Nesbitt was favoured
for gold and seemed headed to the podium before fading down the
stretch. She finished sixth in 1:58.33.
Nesbitt and Groves have dominated the 1,500 this
season, each winning two World Cup races. Groves currently sits
first in the 1,500-metre World Cup standings. Four years ago,
Canada dominated the podium in Turin, with Winnipeg's Cindy Klassen
placing first and Groves coming in second. Wust won bronze.
Klassen, one of the most decorated Olympians, placed
21st with a time of 2:00.67. She won gold in this event at the
2006 Turin Olympics.
Follow Winnipeger Brittany Schussler, ranked fifth
in World Cup points standings, placed 35th with a time of 2:04.17.
