Team Spirit: Aboriginal Girls in Sport

Consultations

CAAWS and the Aboriginal Sport Circle are committed to learning and sharing information about the needs, interests and experiences of Aboriginal girls and young women, and the realities of providing community sport programs for this target group. Team Spirit consultations are designed to increase capacity at the local, provincial/territorial, and national levels to increase the participation of Aboriginal girls and young women.

CAAWS and the Aboriginal Sport Circle will host consultations in each Team Spirit community. Practitioners and policy makers from across sectors delivering sport and physical activity programs, involved in health promotion, and/or serving Aboriginal communities are invited to attend these events.

What will be discussed?

  • Talk about the importance of sport and physical activity for Aboriginal girls and young women, discuss what barriers they confront to their participation, and identify strategies to keep them active!
  • Share your own physical activity experiences, and program successes and challenges.
  • Learn about the community programs and how you can be involved.
  • Hear about the national Team Spirit project, the Aboriginal Sport Circle, and the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity (CAAWS).
