On the Move History

Prior to the national launch of On the Move in 1994, On the Move initiatives had been successfully implemented in Ottawa ON and Port Coquitlam BC. The overwhelming success of these programs, and the abundance of research about the lack of programming for girls and young women, convinced Sport Canada to support CAAWS in their involvement in this very positive and progressive initiative. Since that time, successful On the Move programs have been organized in almost every province and territory in Canada.

Between 2002/2003 and 2004/2005, CAAWS received funding through the Public Health Agency of Canada’s Canadian Diabetes Strategy. The purpose of CAAWS’ On the Move Diabetes Project was to increase the capacity of organizations in the health, education, social service and active living sectors to integrate On the Move concepts into their policies, programs and services. Through this project, CAAWS partnered with seven diverse organizations on specific projects, and met with another 19 organizations to discuss On the Move and CAAWS, and what resources and opportunities were available to support physical activity for inactive girls and young women.

In 2004/2005, CAAWS received funding through Sport Canada’s Sport Participation Development Program to collaborate on a new On the Move project in partnership with the Aboriginal Sport Circle. Team Spirit: Aboriginal Girls in Sport is a national, multi-year project to increase community sport opportunities for Aboriginal girls and young women. Over the course of the Project (until March 2008), nine communities in eight provinces/territories across Canada will receive funding and collaborate with CAAWS and the ASC to develop and implement community sport programs for Aboriginal girls and young women, increase their capacity to address the needs and interests of this target group, and raise the profile of female Aboriginal leaders and role models. Team Spirit will also leverage funding to support action in other communities through knowledge generation, communication, and evaluation. For more information about Team Spirit click here.

Although On the Move has evolved in many ways, the purpose has remained the same – to encourage the participation and leadership of girls and young women in sport and physical activity.
