Building Capacity to Increase Retention Rates for Girls and Women

OSRCF Leaders

Some of our PSO Women Leaders gathered in Toronto for a CAAWS event in November.

About the Project

CAAWS is partnering with ten Provincial Sport Organizations (PSOs) to increase retention of women and girls as athletes, coaches, officials and league executives in their respective sports.

Understanding that growth and retention of participants and leaders are key priorities for sport organizations, we’re striving to address these issues by increasing the capacity of staff and key volunteers to create organizations that are welcoming to women and girls.

The ten PSOs participating in the project are: Ontario Football Alliance, Ontario Volleyball Association, Rugby Ontario, Freestyle Ontario, Ontario Weightlifting, Muaythai Ontario, Judo Ontario, Canoe/Kayak Ontario, Softball Ontario, and Squash Ontario.

Through this project, these organizations will be able to identify and develop solutions to get more women and girls involved in sport as not only athletes, but in all roles within their organizations.

Project Activities

Between April 1, 2018 and March 31, 2020, all project partners will:

  • Conduct an organizational assessment to generate insight on current programming, barriers and opportunities, and the readiness of the organization’s membership for different strategies and tactics.
  • Identify and train two female leaders within the organization to become knowledgeable “in-house” resources on the engagement of girls and women.
  • Coordinate a customized consultation with key organization staff and volunteers to review the findings of the assessment and identify the areas of greatest need and opportunity.
  • Test and evaluate identified strategies/approaches/activities with the organization’s membership.

This project is funded by the Government of Ontario through the Ontario Sport and Recreation Communities Fund.
